FAQ:

Do I have to wait to start styling my new dreads?

You don’t have to wait any period of time before you can style your dreads. Keep in mind that new dreads are very stiff and therefore they may get “stuck” in a certain style if you style them immediately after getting them. If you put your new dreads back into a ponytail, when you take the ponytail out, the dreads will hold the shape they were in. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. They will “forget” the shape once you sleep on them, get them wet, or wash them.

Can using hair ties damage my dreadlocks?

It is possible for hair ties to damage your dreadlocks, even though it’s not extremely common. To avoid the possibility of damage to your dreads, there are some things you may want to keep in mind. Wearing your hair up in the exact same way every day can affect the shape of your dreads. If you wear a high ponytail one day, try to adjust the position of the ponytail to be slightly lower the next day. This will keep the hair tie from squeezing the same spot on your dreads every day which can lead to kinks, breakage, and weak spots. If you use a traditional hair tie, try to find one that is wider and larger. Dreadlocks are much thicker than loose hair, so you’ll want to size up on your accessories to avoid them putting too much pressure on your dreads.
