New dreadlocks can be started on any hair type, texture, and thickness. Most hair textures can be turned into dreadlocks when hair is about 6” long. Very fine-textured, curly hair can be shorter, while thicker/coarse-stranded, straight hair may need to be a couple of inches longer.

New dreads are started by neatly sectioning loose hair in a bricklaying pattern. We’ve found that this sectioning helps the dreadlocks fall naturally in between one another, creating a more uniform look with less bulk and minimizing the visibility of the scalp in between sections. Each section is then backcombed, which is the first step in the knotting process, then the crochet hook is used to make a series of knots that starts at the roots and continues downward.

You can choose to leave longer wispy ends or blunt the tips, or you can choose something in between, depending on the style you’d like to achieve. Some dreadlocks can be blunted right away while others hold best when blunted later on, depending on the texture of the hair. An experienced loctician can help you make the decision that will work best for your hair.

Dreadlocks will naturally thicken up with time, so it’s best to choose a smaller size initially, since dreads can expand to double or triple in size once fully mature. They will be very tight, stiff, and skinny at first, but gradually soften and thicken.

FAQ:

My hair is straight, can I still have dreadlocks?

Yes! New dreadlocks can be started on any hair type, texture, and thickness.

How long does my hair have to be to start dreadlocks?

Most hair textures can be turned into dreadlocks when hair is about 6” long. Very fine-textured, curly hair can be shorter(usually 3-4”), while thicker/coarse-stranded, straight hair may need to be a couple of inches longer(8”).

Is it painful to get dreadlocks?

Most of our clients are pleasantly surprised by how painless it is to get their dreadlocks installed. For the majority of clients, it can feel tight on the scalp initially and for a few days after, but not painful. Sometimes certain areas may be more sensitive than others, so it’s also not uncommon to feel some discomfort during the appointment. However, if your scalp is extremely sensitive, it is possible for it to be painful. This only applies to a very small percentage of our clients. If you have concerns about sensitivity, let us know so that we can do everything in our power to ensure you have an enjoyable time with us!

Should I do anything to “prep” my hair before getting dreadlocks?

You can, but it’s not necessary. We encourage clients to wash their hair only once a week after getting their dreadlocks installed, so if you wash your hair daily now, it might be a good idea to try extending time in between washing your hair before getting dreadlocks. Some clients also like to stop using conditioner for some time before getting their dreadlocks started. Again, This is a good idea and you’re welcome to do it, but it’s not necessary.
